The Monday Evening Post (Belated Edition)

My deepest apologies for the lack of posts on here. Now we are back and running.

In class on 2.18.13 we discussed this idea of transfer and using gamificaition as a means for this. We discussed of how it a great idea but does have some major draw backs. One prevalent concern was about the gaming world's occupants. While there are a lot of nice people out there, wanting to help and collaborate, the dark side of gaming was brought to light. The ideas of difficulties of being a woman in these environments, along with the hostility. The question came to mind, if we were to use video games as a means of transferring ideas to real world problems (like J. McGonigal proposes), how do we keep a civil environment? Basically - what would this/should this look like? We also brought up the idea of making sure to not disguise an exercise like math problems, as a game (i.e. Math Blaster).

The biggest thing I took from class was that reminder that we need to constantly be stepping outside of what WE (as librarians) need. With that, as we evolve and needs evolve, our population is going to become more diverse. This will definitely make us have to internalize that we are creating a space that is open for all.

I am super excited about the potential of librarians and libraries allowing time and space to help with transfer of information. I think it will allow for us to be involved in really creative, fun and innovative programs, but more so, I think it is becoming more and more apart of our mission.
