Information Literacy, Digital Literacy, Transliteracy, Blogliteracy, Awesomeness Literacy. So many literacies... what do they all mean?
I am still shaky on what exactly "Transliteracy" refers to. In fact, to be honest, I am still shaky about what exactly information literacy refers to and encompasses. In class we discussed how information literacy includes being competent in skills like search and source evaluation. Search could be in databases, or search engines like Google. But I feel as if there is even more to this idea.
When I think information literacy, it is not only being competent in search and source evaluation, but also in expressing and sharing your thoughts and knowledge to others. Perhaps, I am off the mark with this thought, but I argue that it makes a more complete picture to this idea of "Information Literacy". Why not focus on all parts of the process as librarians? Search and evaluation are great, and they are important but it's like, we as librarians, die off in the researchers process after that. I feel like it would be just as important for a person to not only find information, but then be able to know how to use different programs or technology to get their new knowledge shared with others in effective and creative manners. Yes, this is communication, but I think it is just as important as search and evaluation and should be dealt with equally in a library setting.
I understand time constraints and personalities might deter librarians from helping teach this side of information, but to me it is something I would definitely want to take the time to help with. It is partly why I as interested in using PowerPoint for my screencast in a different way rather than just a slide presentation. I think as librarians, we have a lot of room for creativity and for encouraging innovation and creative thinking of how we can share our ideas and knowledge. I think sometimes we just get rapped up in our own language and thoughts that we forget this aspect.
"When I think information literacy, it is not only being competent in search and source evaluation, but also in expressing and sharing your thoughts and knowledge to others." AGREE!
